You are getting ready to build your dream home and you’ve thought it all through, what you want, what you need, and you are ready to go – or so you think. We have been building homes for many years and there are always things that people think of after the fact and wish they had done differently. I put together a list of things that some past clients have realized during and after the process of building their new home and wished they had known or done differently.
Lighting
Light fixtures, windows and outlets should be plentiful in your house. You will see rooms in a whole new light (no pun intended) when you have the right number of windows and light fixtures in them, it will make the difference between loving an open space and feeling like you are in a dungeon.
Laundry Room
The placement of your laundry room is a very personal decision, one that you really need to think about, where does it make the most sense for your family and situation.
Furniture Placement
No, you are not putting the cart before the horse here. This is something you need to think about when designing your house. Where do you want your couch and chairs to go? How do you want your bedrooms set up? Is there enough room in the dining room to slide chairs out and still walk behind them if needed? So many little things but this is a big one that you need to take into account when you are designing the house.
Bathrooms
What fits your needs now is one thing, but will they still work for you in 10, 20 or 30 years? How long do you plan to live here? You need to take that into consideration when thinking about tubs and showers, do you want a combo or a separate walk-in shower. Leave space around the sides of toilet to be able to get a vacuum or broom/mop in there when cleaning. Keeping a space small is one thing, but functionality of that small space is another when you are using it every day.
Things Always Look Worse Before They Look Better
You are seeing everything as it happens, this is the before picture, the after picture is going to look so much different! Remember that, if you have questions or start to panic, tell us and we will talk through what is going on.
Mistakes Happen
I know this isn’t something you want to hear, it isn’t something we want to say, but we are realists. Building the perfect house and having everything run smoothly typically doesn’t happen, this will come up and things will change. There are a lot of people working to help build your dream and there are many moving parts. We will work to communicate clearly with you through the entire build process. That is the key to building your new house, COMMUNICATION!
Enjoy the Process
Enjoy the process of building your new dream home as much as possible. There will be stressful days, there will be days of joy, there will be days of excitement and there will be days where you think everything is going wrong. It is so exciting to see your dream become a reality; you get to see your vision brought to life. So always remember to enjoy the process, it will be over before you know it.
