Moving is a big chore and there are a lot of moving parts. We have come up with a comprehensive time-line and checklist to assist you when the time comes to move into your new custom home.
5-8 Weeks Before
- Start getting estimates and checking availability (if you are moving around the 1st of the month, you may want to start this about 3 months out as those dates book up the quickest)
- Create a budget for moving expenses
- Create a file to keep everything in one place
- Get medical and dental records and store in a secure place
- Request transfer of school and veterinarian records
- Put all legal and financial records in one place
- Begin purging – what are you going to keep, donate and get rid of
- Order boxes and moving supplies (paper/wrap/tape/markets, etc)
- Begin packing items you don’t use often – ensure you CLEARLY label boxed with their content and the room it will go in once you get to the new house
- File a change of address with the post office
2-4 Weeks Before
- Notify your utilities of the move date (both at your current house and your new house)
- Make necessary travel arrangements and necessary overnight stay reservations for your pet
- Notify your banks, credit card companies and any other businesses you have accounts with of your new address
- Confirm travel arrangements
- Plan meals that use up frozen and perishable items
1 Week Before
- Confirm and review your moving details with your moving company
- Notify friends and family of new address
- Pack your essentials box and keep it in a place it won’t get misplaced
- Drain lawn equipment of gas and store properly
- Empty and defrost your freezer and refrigerator
- Finish packing everything but the essentials you will need in the last few days there
- Make sure all boxes are labeled with their contents and destination room
Day of the Big Move
- Supervise the movers to ensure nothing is missed and everything is handled with care
- Place carpet, floor and door frame protectors through the house to protect the surfaces
- Once the movers have loaded all of your stuff do a last walk through of every room to make sure nothing has been left behind
- Leave a note for the new residents of your home with your mailing address for any stray mail that comes in
Moving doesn’t have to be stressful if you plan ahead and stick to your checklist. This will help make the process seamless and ensure you get moved into your new home as efficiently as possible.
